Googel als eierlegende Wollmilchsau im Büroalltag

“10 Simple Google Search Tricks” hatte die New York Times Technology-Rubrik letzthin zu bieten. Die meisten sind wohl bekannt, aber ein paar Funktionen waren mir neu und könnten im Büroalltag recht nützlich sein:

1. Use the “site:” operator to limit searches to a particular site. If I’m looking for WWD posts about GTD, for example, I could try this search: GTD site:webworkerdaily.com.

Das ist auf jeden Fall praktisch. Ich ärgere mich immer, wenn Sites – sogar einige Online Magazine – keine Suchfunktion bieten oder die Suche einfach grottenschlecht ist.

2. Use Google as a spelling aid.

Ja, das kennen wir Sprachakrobatiker …

3. Use Google as a calculator.

Laaaangweilig!

4. Find out what time it is anywhere in the world. For example, try: time San Francisco

Das wusste ich gar nicht, super! Ich suche ständig vor Telefonkonferenzen irgendeine Zeitzonen-Website um ‘rauszufinden, ob Moskau jetzt auch schon Sommerzeit hat oder so…

5. Get quick currency conversions. E.g.: 100 pounds in dollars.

Könnte schneller sein als meine übliche Site anzuclicken, mal ausprobieren …

6. Use the OR operator. It can be particularly handy in conjunction with the “site:” operator. For example, you could try this search: GTD or “getting things done” site:webworkerdaily.com

OK, könnte nützlich sein, wenn man ein Thema recherchiert, aber nicht sicher ist, welche Keywords passen….

7. Exclude specific terms with the – operator. E.G. looking for information about American Idol but not Simon Cowell: “american idol” -cowell

Die Funktion mag ich. Bei online Clippingdiensten funktioniert das ja auch schon ganz gut …

8. Search for specific document types. E.g.: GTD filetype:ppt

Nutze ich selten, aber gut zu wissen …

9. Search within numerical ranges using the .. operator. E.g Olympic events in the 1950’s: Olympics 1950..1960

Auch nicht schlecht …

10. Area code lookup. Need to know where a phone number is located?

Na, ja gut –wer darauf nicht kommt … aber es musste wohl ein 10ter Tipp her …
